This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
By the end of the year, I want my students to be able to read text fluently. The biggest challenge is maintaining their engagement in our books. "ÃÂÃÂThe more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
My students are a fun-loving group despite the hardships they face on a daily basis.
For most of my students, our classroom is their safe haven. It's a place that provides them with shelter, food, and water. It's a place for them to make friends and build community. It's a place they can call home. They come to school everyday with smiles on their faces, ready to learn. They have a passion for learning that is just indescribable. Though, as time goes on, I see them lose focus and become disinterested in learning, especially reading. When asked why, their response is "the books we have our old and boring".
Our school is located in the heart of the Iron Triangle. We primarily service African American and Latino students. Most of our families are poverty stricken. Likewise, our school lacks fundamental resources needed to provide our students with an equitable education. Even pencils and paper are hard to come by leaving most teacher to have to fend for themselves.
My Project
By providing my students with these books, stamps, magnetic word builders, book bins and other resources they will be able to read texts that will inspire them to become lifelong learners. The books that I am requesting will be the start to creating our very own classroom library filled with books that are of interest to this generation of youth. I envision no longer having to beg students to actually read during independent reading or watching them fight over the few books that I have purchased myself. Adding these books to our library will throw out all the excuses my students currently have for not reading independently. This collection of books will help reengage my students' interest in reading.
My students need engaging books that will inspire them to become lifelong readers.
From this, my students will come to learn that reading one of the most valuable skills they will learn in life. It is the gateway to other forms of communication. Providing my students with these books will help give them a promising future as noble citizens of the community.
