My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." ~Dr. Seuss
My 1st grade students come from low or middle income families.
I do have an influx of students that have come to the United States from the Dominica Republic and Puerto Rico. Many of my students speak little english and their parents do not speak english at all. My 6 year old students are eager to learn and they are excited about school. Our school is a Title I school and our students all qualify for free lunch. My students do not have access to the learning materials at home that would promote their academic success. They are at a huge disadvantage because they can not get academic support at home because many of their parents do not speak english.
My Project
Center time in my classroom is the most valuable time for my students. During this time my students work independently so that I can assist other students in a small group setting and target different reading strategies. We have limited materials to help build phonemic awareness and the phonics kit that I am asking for will help build their phonemic awareness and help them to become better readers. This phonics program will help me differentiate the ways my students are learning in a smaller setting. In a class of 32 first graders with only one teacher this listening center will allow students to have additional time practicing letters sounds and sight words. By supporting this project you can promote the reading development of my students and giving them a joy for reading.
This donation will increase the reading levels in my classroom.
Grade one is the foundation of a child's academic career. If they are not able to read they will suffer as they get older and move in the higher grades. This listening center will help my students become fluent independent readers. It will help struggling readers gain confidence. My students will foster a love for reading that will last a lifetime.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
