Oh The Places We'll Go!

My students need virtual reality goggles and an iPad to help them foster and develop a genuine curiosity for the places and cultures that we study throughout the school year.

My Students

My students come to school every day ready to show me, their peers, and the other adults in and around the school building just how great they are. As we live in the diverse city of Boston, we have students from families from all over the world. There are students in my class from Haiti, Nigeria, the Dominican Republic and Cape Verde to name a few places. There are a total of five languages spoken in my classroom, including English and Spanish. And while my students are from different corners of the world, they embody our school virtues--Curiosity, Collaboration, Empathy and Perseverance--everyday.

My students work diligently to understand the similarities and differences between themselves and their classmates through dialogue and love.

Listening to my students discuss a difficult math situation or debate a character's motivation in a text they've just read is like watching genius happen. Not only do students listen to one another and build on each other's ideas, but they also are able to balance and make sense of differing opinions even when they are diametrically opposed to their own.

My Project

Throughout the school year, my students are fortunate to study many diverse topics embedded in our literacy curriculum. At the beginning of the school year we read and analyze several texts, both nonfiction and fiction, that explore the challenges people overcome around the world to access books. In another unit of study, we compare the customs and traditions of three different countries using a popular children's book series and other informational texts. These texts and the activities used to analyze them help to nurture my students' innate curiosity, further develop their ability to empathize with people different from themselves, and deepen their understanding of what it means to persevere through difficult social, political and academic concepts.

Virtual reality goggles and a class iPad would enhance my students' ability to connect with the various people and cultures they study throughout the school year.

In small groups, students will use the virtual reality goggles to walk in the shoes of a young man who lives in Appalachia who learns to love reading because of the bravery of a special librarian. They will visualize and explore the landscape of Chad to understand how children in Chad rebuild their school every year. Additionally, they will read about refugees from Central Asia who find ways to keep their customs and traditions alive, either orally or graphically through literature. Also in small groups, students will use the class iPad to watch and discuss videos of people, many of whom are refugees or immigrants, from all over the world; people with vibrant cultures that should be studied and celebrated. They will use the iPad to research and make connections to their own native cultures, as well as better understand the impact these various cultures have had on our local community as a result of immigration.
