My Project
Our blind and visually impaired population that does not have enough vision to travel safely, they depend on mobility canes to be their eyes. The reason we say the mobility canes are their eyes because the mobility cane detect any obstacles that may be in the traveler's path that the eyes cannot see. For this reason every child's cane is prescribed based on a measurement of height from two inches above the sternum to the child's feet. This measurement is done in this fashion to assure the student's cane extends out two feet in front of them. The two feet is allotted to give the traveler time to react to the obstacle the cane has encountered.
I am requesting Donors Choose to help with the funding of mobility canes because as we all know education budget is always reduced to save other things in the budget.
When I first started teaching cane travel, we would have enough funding that each child was allotted 2 canes per year for the purpose of growth and/or damages. Now, the budget allows one cane per child per year. For this reason, we are constantly recycling old canes to create canes that we can reuse should the student's cane get damaged or they outgrow their cane. These mobility canes and mobility pouches will allow our students to become independent and safe travelers and safely store their canes when they are not in use.
Oh the places we will go when our students have adequate canes and cane pouches. Our students can travel without the worry about having to use a too small mobility cane or recycled canes. The mobility cane pouch will allow our students to safely store their cans when they are not in use rather than storing them on the floor or ground.
