My students need a class set of Scholastic News, Science Spin, and continent books to read nonfiction texts that will allow them to wonder and explore factual information about Earth.

My students are a highly diverse group of students in many areas. They are both ethnically and socioeconomically diverse. They are a curious group of students that also show a diversity in their views as well as their learning styles. Our school thrives on honoring the individuality of each student and valuing what they bring to our school community. Students are encouraged to be independent, critical thinkers and to learn more about the world around them through books, magazines, technology, and each other.
Our classroom theme is Wondering and Exploring Earth. We are planning to travel all around our great planet! We are beginning our year studying about our planet from what's inside to its geographical features. We will then study the prehistoric life on Earth as we learn about fossils and dinosaurs. Our theme is permeated throughout everything we do as we constantly ask students what they are wondering about and provide opportunities for them to explore where their wonderings are taking them.
Using Scholastic News will allow my students to wonder and explore weekly about what's going on around them in the different regions and biomes we will be studying this year.
This gives them an opportunity to actually go to the places we are studying about through the magazines. This year's Science Spin themes support our curriculum as well as take them to locations within our planet and give them a chance to focus on geography and science as they improve their nonfiction reading skills. Scholastic News, Science Spin, and the continent books will help to facilitate their culminating project of creating their own planet earth and sharing highlights they've learned from the different continents. This project will help my students learn more about the world, gain comprehension skills that meet the Common Core Standards with the variety of text structures presented in Scholastic News and the continent books, and will also allow my students to continue their journey of becoming independent facilitators of their own learning.
