I am a fourth-grade teacher at a Title I school in Newport News, Virginia. I am partnering with teachers in grades 3-5. We have a very diverse group of students who want to do well and are eager to learn. Many of our students are from low income classrooms and come from a variety of backgrounds. Often, school is the only safe place for them and the only place where they can be children.
We believe that our students are capable of doing anything that they set their minds to; however, they need to be able to believe in themselves and see that others, just like them, are successful despite their challenges.
Being exposed to diverse books can offer students visibility and relatability. All students deserve the chance to see themselves as they read. These books offer vital life lessons about dealing with difficult social and emotional situations, and they teach respect and empathy for all types of people. By having a variety of diverse books that students are able to access, our students will become inspired and see that they are capable of achieving their dreams.
My Project
The majority of our students are students of color and those that come from low-income households. We want to provide students with books that have diverse characters so that they can relate to the stories. Also, providing books that were written by a number of diverse authors can inspire young readers. We truly believe that all students are capable of accomplishing their dreams; however, they need to see that others with similar backgrounds have succeeded. Our students also struggle with social-emotional skills. These books will help us teach our students coping strategies and how to appropriately respond to their emotions.
These diversity and social-emotional books will show our students that all things are possible.
Teachers in grades 3-5 will have access to these books and will incorporate them into their lessons.
We want students to be proud of where they come from and not be ashamed of who they are. The possibilities for our students are endless. These books will definitely be a tool showing them that their race, gender, and socioeconomic status should not prevent them in achieving their goals.
