My Students

Oh the aching backs! I teach a combined grades 4 and 5 Special Education class in an inner city, high need area. We are currently using primary sized tables and chairs that are too small for them. They are uncomfortable and often fall out of their chairs.

I have 8 students in a small classroom.

It is a multi-graded class. These students are learning disabled and many have ADHD. Our school services 300 students and is confronted with serious budget cuts. There is no money currently in the budget for classroom furniture.

My Project

Please help them! They have so much to overcome educationally to begin with, having them uncomfortable just adds to their difficulties. Your generosity of age appropriate desks and chairs will enable them to "spread out" and be comfortable. It will allow for flexible seating in terms of group work and individual needs. Often a student will need a time out. Right now there are few options. This will allow for the space they need. Much of my teaching is grouped by ability or need. Having desks will make this seating much more doable than it is now.

Right now, my students feel like "second class citizens" having to use furniture that not only is uncomfortable but is so different from other students their same ages.

As adults, we know the importance of our bodies being properly supported in order to do our work imagine spending 6 hours a day in a chair and at a table that was meant for 6 or 7 years old. Please help my students be able to learn!
