Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In the middle of showing a class of fifth graders the video "Singing In The Rain" as an introduction to my tap dance unit, my VCR died. Last year an anonymous donor from Donor's Choose generously bought my class a new TV. At that time I asked only for the TV, and I said that I would be happy to bring my VCR and DVD player from home - which I did. The VCR was quite old and, I guess, with all the use it has gotten this year, it's time had just come. My DVD player also gets quite a lot of use, and as such, probably is on it "last legs" as well. The TV, VCR and DVD player all are used in my dance classes at PS 310. I teach dance to about 600 children in grades K -5. In the past, many of the videos and DVDs that I have shown my classes have been classic American films such as The "Wizard Of Oz", or movie musicals such as "Annie" and "Singing In The Rain". I think that all children should know these important pieces of American culture. While the newer movies are on DVDs, Most of the older films that I have in school are on video. Therefore, I still need a VCR to show these older films. I do not think that I can put a value on my students seeing the great performers of the past,such as Baryshnikov in "The Nutcracker", or Gene Kelly in "Singing In The Rain", or Fred Astaire in "Easter Parade". These great performers serve as great motivators and inspirations for my students, and as such they are priceless. All my students anxiously await the last 10 minutes of each class to see what new film or part of we will be watching this time. (It does take many classes to get through a whole movie this way, but I find it helps build memory) The students on all grade levels and I would truly appreciate having a new VCR/DVD player so that we can continue to watch and learn from the past masters of music and dance. I know that Califone products are specifically designed for the heavy duty that an elementary school demands. Therefore, I am respectfully requesting a new DVD/VCR made by Califone to fulfill all the needs of my students at this time. Thank you.
