My Students

Do you remember the feelings you experienced back in 5th grade when your teacher announced you were going to begin a new science investigation? Were you filled with anticipation? Excitement? Curiosity? Shouldn't all children have the opportunity to experience these same feelings?

I have the pleasure of working with 5th graders of every ability level in Tucson, Arizona.

This year, my classroom is home to thirty-four 5th graders who are all passionate about learning by doing. We love diving into new topics, identifying questions that require further scientific inquiry, and investigating to build our knowledge of the world around us. We are working hard to become better geographers, mathematicians, artists, authors, community members, and scientists.

My Project

Each day, my students and I utilize the scientific method as we interact with the world around us, both in school and out. For the past few years, my students have used a composition notebook to document their journey through the scientific method as they built their knowledge of energy, forces of motion, matter, and the solar system. Unfortunately, the composition notebooks are not up to the challenge of the daily wear-and-tear my students put them under as they engage in a variety of learning opportunities. Official, hardbound Scientific Notebooks would provide them a location to record ideas, inventions, investigation data, observations, and additional work details that are a vital part of the learning process. In addition to a place to keep their work, the Scientific Notebook will also be a point of pride for students as it will provide further evidence that they are scientists and what they discover as they learn about the surrounding world does matter.

By providing students with official Scientific Notebooks to document their learning during investigations, students will be given the opportunity to engage with their learning in a new, meaningful way.
