We're all set to create our writing and STEM projects, but wait a minute. We need Microsoft Office to do so. There's no getting around it. That software is so important if our students are to present their work using technology.
We are a fifth grade class in a New York City public school.
We live in one of the most diverse areas in the country and that happens to be in the borough of Queens. We are so proud of the many languages we speak and the diversity of our school community. The students are very motivated to succeed and we have a global perspective on learning because of our backgrounds. Our families have high expectations and hope to realize the American dream through education. To do this we need the best tools possible and these days one can't get by without technology and the appropriate software to foster project based learning.
My Project
We are requesting Microsoft Office for three computers. We already have them on the other two we use that were funded by DonorsChoose, but in order for our students to work efficiently, we need to have three more licenses for Microsoft Office. Our students work in groups collaboratively and during project development, we have some students create charts or spreadsheets while the others type up the team's work using Microsoft Word. That requires more versions of Office and three more would really be helpful, especially of the 2013 version of Microsoft Office. The newest features would really enhance our projects. Students would become familiar with those new features that might just be the polish needed for a winning entry to a competition. We're convinced that keeping current while successfully completing our writing and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) projects is essential to the students' academic success.
Our students are working on Toshiba Exploravision STEM projects, are typing financial literacy essays and typing their writing in other content areas.
For this we definitely need Microsoft Office and all its components so that we have fine projects to submit. We have chosen modestly priced versions of the latest Office Suite that will be used by students for years to come. Hopefully we'll have support to bring the Office Suite to our computers.
