My Students

I am a teacher of English Learners in a low-income, high poverty school district. My elementary school students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. These challenges are both academic and social-emotional.

Despite these challenges, my students have a love for learning and give their best effort every day.

Our vibrant school community embraces diversity in every form. We celebrate the inclusion of all students in our programs and classrooms.

My students not only work hard on building their academic skills but also on their social skills. I am always amazed at the perseverance, bravery, and resilience they have when they arrive at our school with little or no English and succeed!

My Project

Every English Learner student will receive a Welcome to School Kit when school starts or when they first arrive. Students often do not have the basic supplies needed to complete schoolwork at home. The Welcome kit may include items such as pencils, crayons, paper/notebook, pencil sharpener, glue sticks, erasers, scissors, a book that identifies important people in the school, a map of the school, school calendar, school handbook, community resources, and books at their level.

These kits will help them feel welcomed and get them prepared for success in school and at home.

All written materials will be translated into their native language. It will ease the transition to our school and develop a home school community connection.
