My students need supplies to do lab activities that teach them some basic concepts in genetics.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
To truly understand life you must understand how the information encoded in the DNA of an organism determines the traits of that organism. Thus to truly understand living organisms, students must know how traits are passed from one generation to the next.
The students enrolled in our medical biology classes are an energetic group and are eager to learn.
In recent years, the size of our student body has increased dramatically, but the laboratory resources available have not kept up with the increasing size of the school. They are a diverse group that expressed interest in healthcare-related fields, and many hope to pursue careers in healthcare after graduation. The students in these classes learn biology just like their peers, but with a medical emphasis. This class serves as the first course of our medical pathway where students are continually exposed to medically related topics as they progress towards their high school diploma.
My Project
This project will purchase supplies for our medical biology students to help them better understand fundamental concepts of heredity. In this regard, the corn allows students to collect real data to demonstrate fundamental genetic laws that demonstrate how genes are randomly and independently passed down from one generation to the next. After collecting the data, students will perform statistical analyses to compare their observed results with what is expected. Likewise, the synthetic blood-typing kits allow students to use their knowledge of genetics and apply it to human blood types to understand how the genes one inherits relates the blood type of an individual. Aside from genetics, using this lab also allows the medical biology students to learn aspects of immunology and why blood-typing is important for compatible blood transfusions. In this regard, students not only learn genetic concepts, but the activity is also a more direct application of genetics to their potential future careers in medicine.
