Odds & Ends to Keep Our Classroom Running Smoothly
Help me give my students additional bookcases, bookends, and bins to house and organize our classroom library, as well as a variety of classroom materials that students otherwise would have to pay for themselves.
I work with a somewhat non-traditional student population in a small rural Kansas high school. Many of my students are looking to enter directly into the workforce, attend vocational programs, takeover family businesses, and some simply have no interest in pursuing formal post-secondary education; therefore, my classroom must function to meet the needs of a diverse student population with many post-secondary goals and aspirations. My school is also seen as a safe haven for students to escape their less-than-stable home lives and the stressors of supporting their families through after-school employment. Because of this, I strive to make my classroom as comfortable and welcoming as possible.
My Project
To begin, this project was created based on extra donation gift codes I received from my previous Donor's Choose Flexible Seating initiative. While determining how to spend those additional funds, I started to make a list of necessities - items that my students need and use in my classroom that are otherwise unavailable. Two topics emerged: additional space for our growing classroom library, and basic items that we use frequently to complete class activities and projects.
Based on our needs, I created a list of "odds & ends" materials that could help my classroom and my students function more easily.
My students and I have been working hard to continually add books to our growing classroom library to keep students engaged in independent reading. Several of these materials will supplement our classroom library by providing additional space for books, book ends to keep them organized, and bins to separate books by genre. Because most of our classroom library is second-hand books, the book tape will desperately help repair books that are "well-loved."These additional classroom library materials would essentially allow us to continue to expand our book selection and keep them organized.
Additionally, this project would provide several normal classroom materials that supplement our everyday curriculum, including poster-board, blank books, and highlighters. These are items that my students traditionally would have to provide for themselves to complete classroom projects and assignments. So by providing these items for my students to use, instead of requiring them to spend their own funds to get them, my students will be able to focus on what's important in my classroom: learning!
