My students need materials to enhance our phonics lessons such as whiteboard erasers and Lysol wipes, glue sticks, a pocket chart and a fraction calculator so our classroom can run smooth.
My students come from a very diverse range of home structures. They live with families that are nuclear, single parent, multiple-family, foster and military families. My students are fourth graders who love learning. The majority of my students come from low, socioeconomic backgrounds. More than sixty-five percent of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
My students have learning or emotional disabilities and many have multiple diagnoses.
Our school can be described as a fun, caring and creative environment for our students to come to daily.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I hope to inspire my learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
I have recently finished Phonics First training. In this training, I learned many new ways to help my students learn new sight words, spelling words, and vocabulary words. The Ziploc bags and paint will be used to make gel bags to practice writing new words that are being taught. I will add magic sand to the pencil boxes for tracing practice. I learned that using red crayons is part of the Orton Gillingham method to learn new sight words. I have writing screens that my students will be able to use the crayons with. I am going to make letter tiles with the glue sticks. Students will be about the trace the new sound with their finger.
Organization is key in the classroom.
I will use the pocket chart and pens for each student to have a place they are able to keep and storage all of their learning material from each of our phonics lessons. The whiteboard erasers are to use with our new paddle boards that I received at my Phonics First training. The fraction calculator will be available for the students to check their answers after completing work.
