Help me give my students things like a costume set, Astrobright paper, and a trampoline for sensory and fine motor activities to participate in, for body regulation and learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a fantastic caseload of special education students at my school. I also go into classrooms to observe general education students that might need a pencil grip, spacer, fidgets or special paper to help with academics. Many of these general education students would benefit from "sensory breaks" or "movement breaks" or fine motor manipulatives to strengthen their hand skills for handwriting. I need wiggle seats for so many children to help them focus. I need weighted pencils for the children to learn to put more pressure when printing. I would say 90% of my classrooms have students that have never seen or experienced board games and manipulatives in their home life. What I love about these students is that they are excited and eager to try the things that I have.
My Project
I am very excited to build a cart of activities for my whole building to learn from. Children are always asking me if they can go to the OT room and do the things I do with their classmates. I want the teachers in my building to be able to "check out the OT cart" for indoor recess. This will give more students who actually need sensory and fine motor "work" an opportunity to access these things. In my cart, I want to include items such as; games, fidgets, disc cushions to sit on and activities to build with. I can't wait for them to try the game Operation. I loved that game as a child.
I also work with 3-4-year-olds who need dress up clothes and fine motor manipulatives.
This group of children are learning fast and need lots of positive play materials.
