Occupational Therapy - Acquiring Skills for Being a Student!

My Project

From a young age, children are exposed to fine motor skills in play (blocks, crayons, and looking at books), developing self care skills (finger feeding, velcro, and picking up toys), and interpersonal interactions (waving, pointing to what they want, reaching to share objects). This begins in environments such as the home and day care, and only intensifies in the school environment. During COVID-19, screens frequently became the main source of interaction for many children -- whether for entertainment, education, or social interaction. This limited many opportunities for developing vital fine motor skills necessary not only for age appropriate self care but also for age appropriate academic functioning. As a result, in the classrooms we are currently seeing an increase in students who are unfamiliar with how to hold pencils, young children who haven't ever used scissors, children with less sensory tolerance, and students who have weaker hands than before the pandemic. In school-based occupational therapy sessions, we address fine motor & visual motor skills, executive functioning, and sensory tolerance -- all of which directly impact a student's ability to participate fully (socially and academically) in the classroom environment.
