This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As elementary music educators, we have the pleasure of introducing our students to music for the first time in their lives. It is our duty to lay the firm foundation of a child's music education, brick by brick. Then we pass them off to middle school to begin ensemble-based learning in bands or choirs.

Any beginning band director will tell you that the majority of their beginning students have little to no working knowledge of how to play any instrument!

Why? Instruments are expensive, plain and simple!

Our school serves roughly 1,100 students -- many of whom come from low-income families. With 9 sections of each grade level K-5, it can be challenging - if not impossible - to get instruments into the hands of our students. And once we do the work of getting the students these instruments, it's even more difficult to inspire a lifelong love of music through them! Historically we have used recorders at the elementary level. However, recorders are loud, harsh, and most students who play them look forward to NOT playing them once class is over.

Solution? Ocarinas! Ocarinas are Italian hand flutes dating back to the late 19th century, popularized by the video game series "The Legend of Zelda." They provide the same instrument-readiness skills that recorders provide while also being more pleasant-sounding, and more interesting to students! Students will enjoy sharing this extremely unique instrument and the skills learned in music class with their friends and families for years to come which will in turn positively influence their musicianship for a lifetime!

Funding for this project will be used to ensure every student in our upper grade levels has access to their very own ocarina for use in class.
