Help me give my students termites so they can learn about animal behavior.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My current biology students are motivated learners at a large, comprehensive high school. They come from various economic backgrounds and have varying levels of academic success. This diverse group has shown remarkable academic progress when I incorporated different strategies to enhance their learning in biology classes. Introducing termites into our curriculum will serve as a fun and engaging way to explore the fascinating world of insect pheromones. By observing how termites use chemicals to mark their trails, students will gain hands-on experience in biological research and experimentation.
The termites will provide an invaluable opportunity for students to engage in scientific inquiry.
My goal for this project is to allow students to test the reaction of worker termites to various ink pens that mimic their natural pheromones. Through this experiment, they will observe scent preferences, the insects' agility in maneuvering sharp angles, and their ability to pick up the scent of a lost trail. These activities will not only deepen their understanding of chemical communication in insects but also foster critical thinking and observation skills. My students are truly special; they attend a 2,900-student Title I school in California, where 66 percent receive free lunch. By incorporating this hands-on learning experience, I aim to inspire curiosity and a love for science among diverse learners, empowering them to explore their interests in biology.
