I teach STEAM in a low-income, Title I school, where most of my students live in poverty. Despite their many obstacles to learning, these students are motivated to learn and excel when provided opportunities and materials to do so. I work hard to create diverse lessons that utilize both technology and hands-on activities to create meaningful learning experiences.
Unfortunately, my classroom budget is very limited and so my students don't have access to technology and materials readily available in more affluent schools.
As the STEAM teacher, I desire to provide every student in the school the means to explore science in new ways despite financial limitations or the myriad of challenges they face outside of school.
My Project
My kindergarten and 1st grade students love to participate in science. They love to hold materials in their hands and get as close to the action as possible to see everything there is to see. This project will create a new living lab right inside our classroom!
These living science kits will let my students literally get nose to nose with the creeping critters to learn first hand what they are like in action!
They will be able to see roots grow, insects crawl, paper decompose, and understand for themselves the importance of each in our ecosystem.
