My fourth-grade students come to school ready to work and explore. Our school is located in a rural area of North Carolina with many beautiful areas close by. The students of our school work hard to exhibit leadership qualities inside our school and in our community. My students love to explore the world around them and they need to understand the natural world in order to make educated decisions about the environment throughout their lives. Our community has many opportunities for walking field trips through nature to see various ecosystems.
My Project
Students will observe the natural world right outside our classroom, then write and draw their findings in their nature journals. We will learn about animal adaptations while taking a "spider safari" using the magnifiers. Students will use the magnifiers to closely examine insects and plants to see their adaptations and record their observations. Students will extend their learning about the natural world by drawing pictures, writing notes, composing Haiku poems, creating acrostics, etc. in their nature journal to describe what they see. The pouches will allow students to have an individual tool kit so they can carry colored pencils, glue sticks, and erasers outside in the schoolyard with them.
