This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The one thing I love the most about my students is how excited they are to get outside to the habitat. This isn't only our outdoor reading area, it's an area the kids and I have developed to attract wildlife. We have done things to make it easier to observe the wildlife like bird and squirrel houses and feeder, but the students will be able to get a better look at the animals in the habitat with the binoculars. There have been many instances that we can not see what the squirrel is doing high in the tree or clearly see what kind of bird is nesting in the tree. Many of the animals that we have observed include bats, squirrels, and many different kinds of birds. Observing the animals is a large part of learning about them.
As we live in a major migratory pathway, students have many opportunities to photograph several species and with the digital camera we will be able to take photos that can be uploaded for a plethora of uses.
Part of what second grade students learn in science is how plants and animals live. Being aware of the ecological diversity and needs of plants and animals helps students learn about taking care of the environment because it is important to the plants and animals survival.
The AI capability of the bird cam will increase their knowledge of species that travel in our area. One of the trees is visible from my room and it would be fun to know exactly what kinds of birds visit us and having close up detail of the birds activity would add a lot of fun and interest to my class.
