I am a special education teacher, and teach children with Autism, ages 5 to 8 years old. We are in desperate need of a TV and combination DVD recorder/VCR in order to utilize research regarding learning styles of autistic students. Recently, researchers discovered that persons with autism have a relative strength in visual processing and can benefit from observing videos to learn many of the routine skills needed to live and participate in their community, this is called Observational Learning. As I have discovered, my students are no exception and respond very well to observational learning. All of them from the most to least challenged are captivated by and benefit from the fun animation, and musical presentation of educational materials that video learning affords. Children with autism require structure in their environment, as well as, consistency in their schedule, but due to limited availability of the use of VCR and no DVD player in my school, it becomes impossible to provide that consistency thus we are unable to implement Observational Learning techniques to their fullest potential. With your generous donation, I will be able to incorporate educational DVD's into our routine to supplement student learning on a regular and consistent basis. I already have many VHS tapes, which help teach academics, improve movement, imitation, following directions and singing for language improvement. The combination DVD/VCR will allow me to continue using materials I have as well as include updated, research based material for teaching social interactions, improved communication and use of body language. This DVD/VCR combo has another great feature that can add a very special component to our autistic classroom. It has recording capabilities. I would be able to use my digital camera or camcorder to record a child reading, reciting, or role playing and then transfer the video clip into a DVD format. The child and/or class could then view and/or critique themselves or be allowed to take the video clip home to share with his or her parents. Recently 3 of my children recited poetry on stage during a school assembly, a monumental step! It would have been wonderful to have it recorded and for them to see themselves on stage. Hopefully we will have that opportunity for our next performance.
