I am lucky to teach some of the most talented, bright, social, and athletic 5th graders with the biggest hearts. We come from a historically marginalized community school that serves Black and Brown students in East Oakland, CA. Despite the many challenges that our young people face, they show up every day with the desire to succeed. Your donation will help us do just that!
This project will allow my students to participate in an author study using the book, "Merci Suárez Changes Gears," by Meg Medina.
By reading this coming of age novel students will compare and contrast the characters and events in this book to another novel we have, Esperanza Rising. Students will also learn more about similarities and differences that other cultures may face when compared to their own helping them connect to the world.
