My Students
A book on a Nook! It's amazing how much the new eReaders are beginning to change the attitudes of my reluctant readers. They are fighting over the current Nooks in the classroom. I've never seen them fight over a paperback book!
My 4th and 5th grade classes are filled with diverse learners and many struggling readers.
Encouraging them to read books in a world of push buttons, interactivity, on/off switches and sound can be a challenging task. I think I've finally found a way!
My Project
I am requesting two Nooks and 4 covers to increase our expanding electronic library. The day one of my students chose as a reward at recess to read a book on an eReader, instead of playing a game on the iPad, was the day I realized how I can encourage them to read. Electronic book readers aka eReaders, are now playing a huge part in our classroom. Through other funded DonorsChoose projects, we are now increasing our electronic library. The students are fighting over who gets the Nook next. Of course we've come up with a fair way to share them, but I have a dream that each child will one day have their own. Seeing my students want to read is just delightful and warming to the heart. The Nooks will help cultivate the love of a "good book."
