Help me give my students mentor texts for teaching nutrition and a pocket chart for modeling healthy choices!
My third grade students are full of love and light and they walk into my classroom ready to learn each day. That gives me encouragement and pushes me to want to be a better teacher and have a better classroom for them.
My students face a lot of challenges as our school is a Title I school in Washington in a rural area where a high percentage of our students eat free and reduced-price lunch and live in poverty.
A lot of our students have experienced trauma and lack resources to help them cope with their life experiences. Many students also speak a home language other than English, which can present additional learning struggles. My students are determined to overcome these challenges and stay successful, lifelong learners, but they need the tools and resources to do so.
My passion is teaching my students life skills. What are they going to need to know how to do in real life? I can't think of anything more important than keeping their bodies healthy. I am asking for a series of mentor texts to supplement my nutrition curriculum and a MyPlate pocket chart to model healthy food choices. Requested books include Good Enough to Eat: A Kid's Guide to Food and Nutrition, Gregory the Terrible Eater, Cami Kangaroo Has Too Many Sweets, N is for Nutrition: Rhymes by the Alphabet, and National Geographic Kids Cookbook: A Year-Round Fun Food Adventure.
My students come from homes that often struggle to put food on the table and then they come to school and are surrounded by unhealthy choices.
My goal with this project is to be able to use these quality books to teach my students about nutrition and give them the tools to make the right choices on their own. Healthy habits are often carried with you through adulthood. It is a lot harder to learn about nutrition and health/fitness later on in life. I strongly believe that being healthy is the forefront to every other aspect of life (academics, social life, etc.)
