My Project

I have a small reading corner in my classroom with several bookshelves, a carpet, and an oversized, old chair. I have a firm rule that students can only sit in the reading corner if they are actually reading. When I teach my English Language Arts class, and my ELL (English Language Learners) classes, the grade-level expectation is that students will read their class novels independently.

It can be difficult for my newcomer ELL students in these classes to be comfortable reading independently.

With everything they are facing as they adapt to the U.S. education system and language, I would like to give my students a space where they can be comfortable and more willing to engage in reading. My reading corner is a place where many of my students like to sit, and I would like to encourage this. Without fail, every time my students have to read a chapter, they all ask if they can spread out to find a comfortable spot in the room to read. When I say "yes," they all run to the reading corner to see who can get the comfy chair first.

Your help with this endeavor would be greatly appreciated by me and my students. Thank you so much for your generosity and for helping me to nurture that love of reading in my classroom.
