My Students

Our middle school is located in a beautiful area, with rolling hills, creeks, and wildflowers.

However, for some of my students, accessing nature can be challenging. With physical limitations and fragile health, going for a walk, gazing at a creek, or taking in the view requires special accommodations. I want them to have the healing gift of the outdoors on a regular basis.

My students are incredible: They're hard working and determined. Some are in wheelchairs, some are nonverbal, some have other challenges, but that doesn't keep them from connecting with their non-disabled peers and being successful. They spend 3 or more years at our middle school, which is located in a rural area. They have many friends, as their peers are accepting and caring, much like our community.

My Project

My students love to be outside. While we have a perfect outdoor space for them to receive instruction and therapy, we are missing an accessible table, that accommodates students with physical limitations. With an ADA compliant table, wheelchairs can easily roll up to the table, and there will be extra seating for non-disabled peers to join in and assist the students. Therapies, such as Occupational, Speech, and Music, can take place outdoors. Functional, fine motor, and vocational instruction can occur outdoors as well.

Outdoor learning can make for happier, healthier, well-rounded students – particularly for those with special educational needs (SEN).
