My Project

The children in our classroom are curious, kind, and excited to learn. Everyday they come to school with a zest for learning about each other, their world, the arts and sciences. My goal for this project is to nurture the range of interests in our classroom as well as provide materials that will help them learn in different subject areas as well as about the human experience.

I aim to build empathy and understanding of different cultures, different experiences, and the love of learning inside and outside of the classroom.

The books support SEL standards of Social Awareness and self awareness as well as create space for representation. Additionally, these books will provide opportunities to meet reading standards like (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2 and CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3) as well as embedding the sciences into literacy (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.2).

Many children have an interest in music and providing them with a musical instrument, like the Ukulele, offers them the opportunity to explore the art as well as learn on a user friendly instrument. Part of the Montessori learning experience is incorporating music into the classroom and this would be the perfect introduction to playing an instrument, if a child has never had the opportunity.

As the children continue to explore their world through music and literacy, having a hands on tool, like a professional microscope, will really peak children's curiosity and expand their understanding of the world at a microscopic level. Children will learn to use the tool, preparing them for upper elementary, make scientific observations (tying in their botany and zoology lessons) and compare and contrast different living and nonliving organisms (NGSS 3-LS1-1). Furthermore, they can use the Elements of the periodic table cards to find different specimens and samples to observe under the microscope, creating an extension for their learning.
