My Students

My class starts with a special object I show the class. I ask students to write down or discuss the meaning and use of the object. This object will be connected to today's activity. Other days, students will come into the room with music/sound effects, odors or decorations to represent the story.

My students come from an area full of daily challenges including hunger, poverty, crime and lack of familial structure.

They need to experience the world though technology, media and other forms of communication. Many are not able to leave their local communities, so their experiences with today's global society are limited. They must rely on the school environment to satisfy their limitless intellectual curiosity, which must be nourished through meaningful academic activities. We have limited resources at our school, and students want to know more about their surrounding world. They must make connections to this world to be competitive in today's institutions of higher learning and the business world. The challenges to be surmounted here are enormous, but students can accomplish much when the teachers work together to develop cross-curricular activities. All the community stakeholders, parents, community leaders, teachers, students and others must invest in these students every day.

My Project

The project, "Walking In Her Shoes-He Called Me Malala", will be implemented before seeing the documentary about the young lady's life. Each group of students will be given a pair of shoes to represent Malala. These shoes will be traditional slippers or sandals worn in Pakistan. A shoebox of objects related to Malala will be given to each group. Objects will include food items, a replica of the Nobel Prize, excerpts from the Koran, a bullet, excerpts from her life story and a map of Pakistan. First, students will make guesses about her life using objects. Each day, students will focus on one aspect of her life. Social studies students will review the geography of her country, the social status of women, history of the country and religious aspects of the society there. Math students will calculate algebraic equations involving map skills and percentages based upon the classes of people there. English students will write a compare/contrast essay connecting their lives to Malala's life.

The donations to see the movie will allow us to have a culminating activity related to Malala's life.

This trip, to see the documentary about Malala, will inspire our students to surmount difficult odds in order to become a success and hero to others in their own community. Our students must take responsibility for their own lives and their education to meet goals and objectives within the school community. Every experience will enrich their lives to reach positive outcomes every day.
