I teach special education to 3rd through 5th grade students in an elementary resource room. Over half of our students are eligible for free lunch. Many families are finding it difficult to provide their children with basic necessities, let alone educational tools. The students that I would like to benefit from this project are struggling readers who are reading significantly below grade level. These students would love to read the books that their peers are reading, but the process of reading is extremely difficult for them.
I would like to purchase a set of MP3 players with headphones that students can take home to listen to and read along with unabridged works of fiction and nonfiction in their areas of interest to nurture a love of reading while developing their reading skills.
My Project
My goal is to provide MP3 players for students to "check out" in order to facilitate their reading of texts that are too difficult for them to read on their own. Many of my students are embarrassed on days we go to the library because they cannot find material to check out that they can actually read. With an MP3 player, students can follow along with the audiobook and be able to comprehend the material because they are hearing it read correctly. Students will be able to take home a copy of the book and an unabridged audible version of the text. These MP3 players will open up new worlds to children who have never been able to experience the excitement of reading.
