Numerous Nice Students have Nothing in Non-Fiction!
My students need a bugs kit, informational texts, and a plant lab to help enhance their learning.

My Students
Do you remember the first time you had to stand in front of a classroom and give an oral report? I would love to help my students whom are diagnosed with special needs conquer their fears of public speaking. Giving them a topic that they and their audience find fascinating makes the task easier.
My students include students who are diagnosed with speech and language impairment, learning disabled, autistic, and emotionally disturbed.
All of my students are registered for Title One services in an urban school in New York City. I would like to present my students with lessons using special hands-on materials, student choice built into the challenging curriculum, and the ability for students to work at their own level.
My students are in the amazing world of second and third grade where learning requires a lot of hands-on activities! My students love science and get excited about interesting and odd things. They all come with amazing and different personalities. Our school is very close-nit and small, but we can make a huge impact!
My Project
These resources, including a bugs kit, informational texts, and a plant lab, will enable my students to fully care for, observe, evaluate and research butterflies and plants that they find compelling and fascinating. The students will prepare a report on their butterfly/plant and share their findings in an oral presentation before their classmates and parents. Parents will be encouraged to assist their child in preparing their report and to practice the oral report. Each student's presentation and report will be evaluated using a rubric reflecting common Core Standards in the areas of speaking and listening.
This project will give them the hands-on materials they need to experiment with the things they are learning about in Science. The materials will be placed in their non-fiction center where they can experiment with each one.
Research supports the notion that anyone can greatly reduce their fears of public speaking through a series of presenting 22 or more oral presentation sessions.
These materials will make a difference in the lives of my students because it will give them the opportunity to truly experiment with things they are learning about which will cultivate a curiosity and love of learning in them. These students may truly be the ones who grow up and make an amazing discovery, find the cure for cancer, or become a great leader!
