This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year I am teaching a ninth grade math class of students who have traditionally not performed well in math- I want to change the way they see math, their relationship with math, their relationship with learning.
My ninth graders will be coming from numerous different middle schools across Brooklyn, but will come together to our public high school and quickly become a community of learners.
In addition to my class, students will be taking another, more traditional, math course- my goal is to build their confidence and strengthen their numeracy skills.
My Project
In addition to classroom discussions, worksheets, and projects- I want my students to have notebooks of their own in order to have a space to communicate their thinking in writing.
For many years, I pushed students to use pencils- asking them to continuously edit their problem solving process through erasing. Now, I believe that students should keep track of their process and not erase- hence the need for felt tipped pens.
I plan to use the patterns blocks to teach fractional understanding- a new approach to a content that they struggle with.
I would love to have these supplies ready for my students at the start of the year so that they feel taken care of and that their classroom (and high school education) is supported.
