This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year, I will have a group of 34 ninth graders who have traditionally been unsuccessful with mathematics.
In addition to my course, they will be in a more traditional math course another period of the day. In my room - I want them to feel successful and that they are interacting with math!
My students are eager learners who, from the start of ninth grade, are expected to work together in order to deepen their understanding of the task at hand.
In New York City, 100% of students who graduate from a public high school are guaranteed admission to a CUNY college. My goal is to make sure that my students are ready for college-level mathematics by the time they graduate from high school - so they can avoid remediation and start earning college credit right away!
My Project
I will have my group of 34 students every day for 43 minutes and will engage them in a variety of educational activities throughout the year, but would love for the trajectory of the course to be grounded in this research-based and progressive curriculum.
I believe that with a solid foundation in the ninth grade these students can reset how they feel as learners.
I want them to learn how to be better problem solvers, to be flexible, and to see that they construct their own understanding of mathematics.
