Number One Reading Hustler

My students desperately need 3 copies of each of 8 books like "Somewhere in the Darkness" and "Postcards from No Man's Land". These books will motivate them to be the Number One Reading Hustler in my class!!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. McAvoy's classroom raised $179

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students sometimes lack motivation to read. They cite boring books as the number one reason they do not read when I tell them to. So, I have started a competition for who can read the most books in my class. I have a wall in my classroom dedicated to "Reading Hustlers" and have promised to provide a lunch with my "Number One Reading Hustler" at the end of the month. They have started to become intersted in reading, some for the first time. If my students do their part, I have to do mine. I have to provide books that they find interesting so they can succeed. Since I teach 110 boys at a military themed public school in NY, finding interesting books can sometimes be a challenge. As a 9th and 10th grade English teacher, I am aiming to improve student reading levels before they take the SATs and state test next year. Right now, students are an average of three years behind in their reading levels. Without improving their reading level, they will not pass. Studies have proved that the best way to improve student reading levels is to READ. Simple enough, right? So my students spend class time every day reading. In the second month of school, their attention has begun to wane. This donation is not just about books. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance that they realize teenage boys all over feel just as they do. Boys are all too often overlooked and suppressed when it comes to emotional problems. My "Free-Write Fridays" reveals every week another student who just wants to know he is normal. Just like all of us, they just want to be heard. Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature!
