Help me give my students a strong foundation in Mathematics. We need number lines, charts, number bonds, tens frames, fact family triangles and other tools to help us see and manipulate numbers! Math should be hands on.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the proud teacher of an energetic group of six and seven year old kiddos that truly bring the sunshine to first grade. My students have little bodies, big hearts and curious minds. Our school is in the heart of Richmond, California, in a high-crime, low-income neighborhood. Our students face adversities before they even step a foot into the classroom but still come to school ready to tackle a new set of academic challenges. I believe that every student deserves access to the resources they need to be successful in life.
“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do, everything around you is mathematics, everything around you is numbers..." First grade is a magical year.
I teach minority students that are exploring math with different experiences and backgrounds. I want to see them represented in the STEM fields. Guiding their curiosity, and creating scaffolds is pivotal in building a strong foundation in mathematics. My students work hard on personal goals everyday to build self confidence. Positive exposure to challenging subjects may be the push they need to later pursue jobs in fields that they are under represented in.
My Project
My sweet students work really hard in whole group math instruction, but sometimes we need more time, scaffolds and tools to really wrap our heads around challenging concepts. They enter first grade with a diverse set of skills that requires differentiated math instruction to meet all of their needs.
"Mathematics is the gate and key to the sciences..." We just need the resources to get there!
Students need to interact with math; they need to be able to see it, touch it and manipulate it. I am asking for tools to help us strengthen our mathematical foundation.
We need a number chart that extends the counting pattern to 120. We will use this chart to count numbers and to add and subtract. I am also asking for resources that extend thinking and support multiple methods for solving problems: number lines, number bonds, fact family triangles and tens frames. I really want my students to be able to understand addition, subtraction and place value in multiple forms; we just lack the resources to explore these concepts in a more holistic approach. I will use the manipulatives in whole group instruction, as well as to provide interventions for struggling students.
