Now You're Cooking with Fire- Or Not! 2

My students need cooking appliances and utensils to continue their education in cooking for an independent future.

My Students

To see the look on the faces of my students when they flip a pancake or eat a grilled cheese sandwich they just made is priceless. The sense of pride and accomplishment is overwhelming. My students need to know they can do things and be independent in their lives.

I work in District 75 school for the NYC DOE.

D75 schools are for students who are severely disabled, either physically or intellectually. It is a high school/occupational training center which is solely geared toward post graduation (21 years old). All of my students are classified as having autism, some more severe than others. But I see potential in every one of them. They have there own personalities and idiosyncrasies as any other human being. I do my best to bring out the best in each one.

My Project

This project, and the resources I am requesting, is a continuation of my earlier fully funded project, "Now You're Cooking With Fire: Or Not"-1. The materials received from that project, funded in half by FEED USA and half by other generous donors, and the benefits to my students, has led me to ask for more appliances to enhance the cooking for independence curriculum I will continue for the entire school year. As with my earlier project, these tools and the skills learned to use them, will create a great foundation in their goal towards independence. My students, for the most part, do not have an academic curriculum, as most academics is beyond their cognitive abilities. I rely on and teach a more functional curriculum, based on life skills and what is called Activities of Daily Living (ADL). I will again, ask FEED USA to help fund this project. It is for the benefit of my students, as well as those in other classes (we have an unwritten sharing policy). Please help attain my goal.

The need to learn basic life skills is so important to this population.

Feeding oneself is the most basic need. As a teacher to this population, my instruction needs to be functional. By giving these students access to ways of preparing meals for themselves is an important part of my job as their teacher. Please aid FEED USA in making this a reality.
