Now on the Big Screen: Adventures in English Language Development
Help me give my students a Samsung 70" Smart Tizen TV and Monitor
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Shafer's classroom raised $947

My Students
My students are all English Language Learners, new to this country within the last two to six years. From Guatemala, Vietnam, Yemen, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, China, Vietnam and the Philippines, they are enrolled in my class for one period a day. They join their English fluent peers for six other courses.
My English Learners students are eager scholars even as they deal with poverty, immigration difficulties, separation from family/friends, violence and PTSD.
They work hard in class but often struggle to stay focused for a variety of reasons. They are less likely to have parents who can help them in the evenings with schoolwork due to language barriers and/or work schedules. They may be working full-time jobs themselves and sleeping very little at night. In some cases, my students have no adult at home because they are in America unaccompanied.
My Project
Our old school television -- a behemoth that covered up precious whiteboard space and was a real earthquake hazard hanging above the teacher desk -- is finally gone from Room 52. So is the old school projector, a victim of overuse.
It's time for English Learners to be able to view videos, PowerPoint presentations and other multimedia that help bring English to life on the big screen -- a 70" Smart TV to be specific.
They deserve this after having to watch their teacher and classmates on tiny Zoom squares on their Chromebooks at home for 16 months.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
