My Students

I have 21 of the most amazing fourth-grade students who are a dynamic mixture of general education, special education, and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!

This year is QUITE unique - I have more students tuning in remotely than I have in person.

I chose in-person learning, and then soon went to blended since I only had 8 kids sign up for in person. After a few students were quarantined due to COVID - my principal saw me live streaming and a few days later asked if I would take more kids to reduce the class size in the fully remote classes. I thought about it. If I could do it for my 3 kiddos, why not take a few more! Well, my 8 grew to 21! It isn't easy! It isn't perfect! But it is what teaching is like in 2020!

My Project

This is by far the craziest school year I have ever experienced in my 24 years of teaching. I have 21 kids, but only 8 in person! The rest of the class tunes in remotely. Boy, it just isn't the same. But ya know what, it isn't bad either. It just is DIFFERENT! And different is ok!

The one thing that I do notice is that the "moments" we teachers cherish are fewer and farther between, and the lively classrooms we are used to just looks different these days.

My bulletin boards are sparse this year. Usually I have to be creative to get all the students work on them. Now, I have a lot of empty space.

We do take pictures when I think about it, even of my remote learners following along online. But I would love to be able to share those photos with the kiddos and staff walking around the mostly empty school.

This photo printer and paper will allow me to print out pictures to display around the school so it feels somewhat normal. To give kiddos in class a photo to take home so they can put it in their room. And the fact that they print on postcard size paper, I can send them to my remote students at home as regular mail.

It isn't the regular school year, so I am looking for ways to make it memorable and fun, no matter the circumstances. I want my kiddos to have a love of learning, no matter the way they are doing it. That is why I think a simple photo can work magic. I want my kids to have great memories of the 2020-2021 school year! Can you help?
