Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need nonfiction literature in their lives. Most of my students are avid readers. Those that are not, quickly become so. However, they just do not have very much nonfiction literature written for them in our classroom or in their homes.
I teach at a very diverse Title 1 school.
This year, I have 18 third graders and 6 second graders in my classroom. My students are Latino, African American, and Asian/Pacific Islander. Ten of my students are English learners. They are all hard workers and extremely eager to learn.
My Project
Time for Kids is a news magazine written for students. It offers age appropriate news stories and features. I plan to use the magazine during Guided Reading time. During this time of the day, I will use the nonfiction articles to help my students build reading fluency and comprehension. I will also use the articles to teach my students about different writing techniques. Last, through Time for Kids, my students will become better informed about important current topics and events.
Time for Kids will be a wonderful asset to my classroom.
It will help make learning fun and support my students in become better readers, writers, and informed citizens. It will also help them meet the Common Core State Standards our state has adopted. We greatly appreciate your support for our project!
