Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I'll remember. Involve me, I'll understand." My students will develop a deep understanding of how letters combine to form words when they are involved in manipulating and exploring letter and sounds with hands-on materials.
My class consists of twenty energetic, curious kindergarten students.
Almost half of them are learning English as a second language. They come from families who often struggle just to provide the bare essentials. Books, educational toys and preschool experiences are uncommon to them.
My Project
Students will use these hands-on materials to explore letters and sounds. They will combine letters and stamp words into play dough. They will create words and sentences with magnetic letters and learn phonics and spelling and reading skills with games on the tablet. By manipulating letters and words they will construct meaning from symbols and use that knowledge to learn how to read. Using all of these materials will help them become betters readers. They will use their newly acquired reading skills to learn about science and social studies. The sky's the limit!
Even though my students may start school lacking common experiences of typical 5-year-olds, they are highly motivated, intelligent and creative little people who are capable of learning at an astounding rate.
