Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Letter recognition is one of the strongest predictors of early reading and writing success. According to research, children with automatic, accurate recognition of letters experience an easier time learning about letter sounds and word spellings than those who do not.
My students, ages 3 to 5.5 years old, are part of an inclusive pre-kindergarten environment.
They live in a multicultural city and for this reason they are very diverse. They are diverse not only in their cultures and ethnic backgrounds, but also in their physical, cognitive, behavioral and emotional learning abilities. Our school is part of a Title I district where at least 75% of students qualify for free or reduced price meals.
My students' love for learning always amazes me. They are curious and eager to learn new ideas through play-based, multisensory, hands-on activities. As a teacher, I am constantly striving to provide new materials and experiences that will allow them to grow in all areas of development. My ultimate goal is to provide a solid educational foundation and instill with them a lifetime love for learning.
My Project
My students need paper, sheet protectors and binders to create their very own ABC Books. With these materials, my students will author and illustrate their own personal ABC books. Similar to many published ABC books, they will transform each letter shape into an animal or object that begins with that letter. For example, an "M" may transform into a monkey, an "S" into a swan or a "V" into a vase. The children will place their finished letter collages in their individual binders in alphabetical order. The binders will be kept in the classroom until the end of the year for them to view and reflect upon.
This ongoing project will enable the children to refine their fine motor skills and learn the letters and the sounds of the alphabet in an authentic and meaningful way. It will also help them make connections between letters, sounds, words and objects.
I believe active and concrete experience is, by far, the most powerful and natural form of learning.
The materials for this project will enable these types of opportunities and allow me to bring hands-on learning to life! By creating ABC books, the children will be able to increase their physical, cognitive and language skills. They will come to a better understanding of the letters and sounds of the alphabet and begin to set the foundation for future reading success!
