My students need developmentally appropriate ways to learn their alphabet and letter sounds such as literacy tubs, magnetic letters, language folder games, and materials to read.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Kindergarten isn't what it used to be. The expectations are high and can be overwhelming for students who are unprepared. My goal is to send my pre-kindergarten students to kindergarten next year knowing all of their letters and the sounds that are associated with each letter.
My students are four- and five-year-old children from primarily low income families.
They attend a half-day pre-kindergarten program intended to prepare them for kindergarten. For most of my students, this is their first school experience and a lot of them have never spent time away from home. It is in my classroom that we build the foundation for later school success.
My Project
My students need developmentally appropriate ways to learn their alphabet and letter sounds such as literacy tubs, magnetic letters, language folder games, and materials to read. These resources would provide a multitude of ways for my students to explore the letters of the alphabet. I would use them in large group, small groups, and center-based activities. The more exposure to letters children receive, the stronger their knowledge base will be. Materials will be used to practice letter recognition, letter sounds, rhyming, and other phonological skills.
Reading by grade three is what the state of Minnesota strives for.
This project will provide students with the foundation that they need so that by the time they are in the third grade, they will be reading to learn instead of learning to read.
