Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a charter school in the city of Camden, NJ. Our school is comprised of four campuses that serve about 1,500 students. I teach K-3 students which is a group of roughly 500 students. My kids are eager learners and curious about learning Spanish. They love to learn through songs and art projects. Luckily, our school dedicates time to world language learning and the benefits of language learning.
My school has a a variety of Spanish speaking students from novice to advanced.
Students love to learn through song and role playing at the younger levels which encourages full engagement. My kids love to play games that involve vocabulary and relish in performing to show off their Spanish language skills.
Students in my district are fortunate to have exposure to a second language from the moment they enter our Pre-K program until they graduate High School. It is not always easy to build a love of foreign language but my kids try their hardest and we have fun doing it!
My Project
These resources will help my students learn and practice their letter sounds in Spanish as well as increase letter recogniton. Recognizing letters and their sounds is a foundational skill that helps young learners develop healthy reading skills.
Developing reading skills in Spanish will also help students develop their reading skills in English.
Post pandemic reading and letter recognition is at an all-time low for many students in my school. These resources will help combat poor letter and sound recognition in a fun and entertaining manner. Students learn best when engaged in something interesting and fun like the the pocket matching word activity or the alphabet books.
