My Students

"If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all." --Oscar Wilde My students need a listening center as a part of our daily literacy block so they can enjoy listening to wonderful stories, along with hearing what a fluent reader sounds like!

My students are a diverse group of Second Graders that come from all types of backgrounds and learning capabilities.

Our school is located in the city of Chicago. Over 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. This is my first year at this school and I can't wait to get to know my students. I want to provide them with the materials that will promote academic success! My second graders will be so appreciative to have a listening center to enrich our classroom academically!

My Project

Our classroom follows a balanced literacy approach using the Daily 5. My students are still rotating through centers. I plan to use the listening center to assist my Diverse Learner population, as well as my struggling readers. I can also use the this center to provide enrichment to students reading at or above grade level. This group of students will be ready to transition to chapter books throughout the year. The listening center can provide some assistance with the structure of a chapter book which is new to them at this grade level. Overall the listening center will reach all of my students in one way or another. Another way I plan to use the materials is by grouping students of all abilities together so that all of my students can feel successful with no stipulations!

It will teach my students how to be better listeners, as well as what a good reader sounds like. In Second Grade we are really working on fluency. Therefore, hearing what a fluent reader sounds like will assist my students in becoming better readers! Please help our classroom achieve this goal and donate!
