Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach reading to two classes of 5th graders in Las Vegas. Many of the 60+ students I teach are English language learners living in a low income area. Regardless of the challenges they may face outside of school, they show up every day with a smile on their face and an eagerness to learn in their hearts.

My students place great value on education and work hard to get the most out of school; both educationally and socially.

My students put in a lot of hard work and practice learning the English language and developing a love of reading!

My Project

These novels are for students to use in group novel studies to apply the skills that are being taught to them. Students will be able to recognize character traits, summarize the chapters, find examples of figurative language, and practice their fluency by reading both as a group and independently.

More importantly, the novels I have chosen have main characters that will show students grit, triumph, and what it means to persevere through hard times and tough battles.

My students will see parts of themselves within these characters in historical fiction like Number the Stars, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, and One Crazy Summer. They will also see many character strengths and what it means to succeed and still be, in some ways, flawed when reading The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Maniac Magee, and Because of Winn-Dixie.
