Novels Or Never: Why I Need Books For Struggling Readers
My students need books. I have carefully selected 40 high interest books for struggling readers. My students are expected to read at least thirty minutes a night.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The challenge facing my students is a lack of reading skills. They are not afraid to read. They simply do not know where to start. The best way to start is by putting an interesting book in their hands. The more chances and materials I give them to read, the better they become as readers!
My students are not coming from text-rich environments.
They come from homes where parents work hard, but may not have a great deal of money. Sometimes a family might consider a book an extra instead of a necessity. They are kind and very hard working students. They simply need guidance on how to read and what they should be reading as well. Reading is the key to all their future success.
My Project
Teenagers are a very tricky age group to teach. It is even more challenging when they come to you afraid of failure and the awareness that they have already failed at becoming readers on grade level. The only way they can become literate adults is a two fold process:
1. Need to be inspired to read
2. Need books that will inspire them to become life long readers
It is not a complicated process. Reading a good book becomes a treasured memory, but when that book is not available, students tend to stay well below grade level. Those teenagers will someday be adults that can not read. This problem is solved with time and materials. I am providing the time. I am humbly asking you, generous donors, to provide the materials. My students need books. I have carefully selected 40 high interest books for struggling readers.
Please donate!
This is your chance to change the future of a person who at this point can not read on grade level. Your decision to help me provide books, will be paid forward as literate teenagers become literate adults, employees, parents and so on! On behalf of my students and their families, I thank you.
