Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most students, and parents alike, come from homes where English is a second language. Despite what many may see as setbacks, my students are enthusiastic and motivated to face challenges head on. In turn, they motivate me to find ways to enrich their education to help them reach their full potential.

My students create personal reading goals throughout the year that are tailored to their needs and interests.

This has created a huge boost in student reading motivation and I can't wait to support them on their journey.

My Project

With the addition of these novels to our classroom library, students will be able to choose from 15 different novels spanning across the genres.

While reading the novel, students will be showing mastery in skills we've discussed through the year, such as theme, setting, character development, and plot.

Students will also be introduced to poetic devices and reinforce their understanding of figurative language.

Students will have the opportunity to read 2-3 novels during the month of April. At the end of the unit, students will create a character mandala for a favorite character and will use several poems from the novels as mentor texts. We will also experiment with other types of poetry such as shape poems, haiku, and black out poetry.

These books will provide my students the opportunity to read more mature themes with texts that are accessible to them. This will push students to be more critical readers while reading at their level and with texts that appeal to their age and interests.
