My Project
Teaching poetry can be cumbersome. It is hard to find poems that interest older middle schoolers without repeating the same few poems all us ELA teachers actually enjoy. After doing some reevaluating this year for how I wanted to run my poetry unit, I thought trying literary circles using books in verse would be a great way to hit all of the standards I want to hit for the rest of the year, while still allowing my students to show mastery of their text analysis. They would get to work in groups, have student choice with picking their novel, and be able to complete engaging assignments that lead to a presentation.
In order to accomplish this goal, I need to continue to grow my collection of bulk novels to give students plenty of options to make this a successful unit.
Thank you for helping facilitate a love poetry in a group of unsuspecting 8th graders!
