This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 7th-grade special education at a middle school in a diverse but poverty-stricken area. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, interests, and goals. However, they all have one thing in common, the desire to learn. With their varying levels of abilities, some are learning the basics of math and reading while others are applying their knowledge to real-world problems.

I am very proud of my students and how hard they try, and I am proud to be part of a middle school that supports them and their diversity every day.

Their lives are hard both in school and out. They don't see a lot of success in themselves, or their futures; especially with being in special education. I strive to do my very best to change that! These kids need the opportunity to shine and become champions!

My Project

High-interest novels are a must for struggling readers who hate reading. Finding lower-level, high-interest books for my special education students can be a challenge when socially, they are like their peers, but academically, they are behind.

My students are noticeably more interested and engaged when they read books that they can relate to and are age-appropriate.

After asking what interests they have and showing them possible options, they have voted on these titles. These novels cover a variety of interests with some relatable to their very own lives. My students are capable, bright learners that just need the right tools to help them grow. This project can give them the tools to help expand and enrich their learning and desire to read. With these novels, I hope my students learn that reading can be enjoyable.
