Novels for Non-Native English Speakers!

My Students

My students are in an urban vocational high school. They range in ability levels, language fluency, and unique learning needs. My school offers different pathways for students that include: welding, automotive, diesel, building construction, CNC machine operating, and CADD. My students are hardworking, kind, and motivated to seek employment during and after high school in their chosen field of study.

Being a teenager comes with its own sets of challenges, but my students face so many more obstacles than that.

Many of the students I teach come from difficult home situations and financial hardships, all while trying to obtain and complete internships at shops in their trades. They have overcome many challenges. Despite these obstacles, they are a joy to teach and I couldn't ask for a better group of students.

My Project

This project is for a class set of high-interest novels entitled "The Music of Dolphins." These novels have authentic themes about society, culture, and being new to a place. All of these themes are relevant to my students who are English Language Learners, because they all come from different countries, cultures, and languages. The text is written at a lexile level that is accessible to my struggling readers while maintaining age-appropriate content and timeless themes.

These novels will help students improve literacy, English language skills, and knowledge of literary elements.

The shared experience of reading a novel together will motivate students to share cultural stories and practices with the rest of the class. It will help teach empathy and kindness in addition to content and literacy. Please help my students succeed with this novel!
